In a major anti-insurgency operation, at least 10 militants were gunned down by a unit of the Assam Rifles near New Samtal village in Chandel district on Wednesday, May 14, according to the Indian Army’s Eastern Command.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs about the movement of armed militants near the Indo-Myanmar border, troops from the Spear Corps launched a swift operation in the Khengjoy tehsil area. The militants reportedly opened fire on the advancing troops, prompting a strong retaliatory response.
“In the ensuing firefight, 10 cadres were neutralised and a sizable quantity of arms and ammunition recovered,” said the Eastern Command in a post on X. The operation is still ongoing.
This comes amid a broader statewide crackdown on militant outfits across Manipur. On May 10, at least 13 militants were apprehended in a joint operation by security forces and the state police.
Security forces remain on high alert as operations continue in the sensitive border regions of the state.
