An ambulance with a driver and a handyman met with an accident last night, leading to the death of the driver, Lamlalsang, and Jimmy Nengsuanpau, due to the fact that the ambulance and its passengers drowned in the Gun River near Teijangkot village.
The two bodies were retrieved from the river in the morning when villagers fished them out, and later the vehicle was pulled out from the river, where it was partially submerged. The ambulance belonged to the Young Mizo Association.
Sources said that the two men were transporting a dead body from Churachandpur to Moreh and met with the accident, believed to have occurred around 1:00 am. No one witnessed the incident, which sources said may likely have been due to thick fog, causing them to misjudge the river crossing point.
The bodies of the two deceased were brought back to Churachandpur around noon today and are presently kept at the Churachandpur District Hospital morgue, with the funeral likely to take place after the New Year’s celebrations.
