Alarming statistics revealed on World Hypertension Day show that nearly 20 to 30 out of every 100 people in Manipur are living with high blood pressure, with retired RIMS Professor Dr. Kshtrimayum Kala urging urgent lifestyle changes to combat the growing crisis.
Speaking at a health awareness event held at Royal Academy of Manipur, Pangei, Dr. Kala stressed the importance of a balanced diet, stress-free living, and regular blood pressure monitoring as key preventive measures.
Themed “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer,” the event was sponsored by Glenmark Pharmaceutical Ltd. and J.B. Chemicals & Pharmaceutical Ltd., and organized with the support of the Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency.
A free medical camp was held as part of the program.
Dr. Kala warned that globally over 2 million people suffer from hypertension, and the trend is reflected locally in Manipur, with prevalence higher than many other Indian states.
He advocated for the reduction of salt, red meat, alcohol, and tobacco consumption while encouraging physical activity and mental well-being to prevent lifestyle diseases.
The event also witnessed the distribution of PMJAY health insurance schemes, with benefits up to Rs. 5 lakh.
