300 Acres of Seasonal Crops Damaged by Floods in Kakching

Farmers in Manipur’s Kakching district are seeking government assistance after recent floods caused by incessant rains destroyed or severely damaged large areas of seasonal crops. The devastation has left many struggling with both financial losses and market access.

Mayanglambam Jackichan, a farmer from Kakching Khunou, told Manipur Update that nearly 300 acres of farmland—mainly watermelon, pumpkin, cucumber, and bottle gourd—were submerged. He estimated a total crop loss of around ₹15 lakh and appealed to the government for financial relief.

As per a report from the District Officer of Kakching, about 16 hectares of farmland were affected. In response, the Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA), under the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, has stepped in to support the affected farmers.

Under its Market Intervention Scheme, MOMA has already procured 10 metric tonnes of horticultural produce—ash gourd, pumpkin, watermelon, and cucumber—directly from farmers. The agency is offering remunerative prices to ease marketing challenges and prevent further loss.

MOMA Project Director Donald Soubam confirmed that around 40 farmers have been severely affected and assured continued support. The agency, which implements the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for the North East Region, urged farmers facing marketing issues to contact their respective District Officers or the Horticulture Department for help.
