The 31st RIMS Firing Victims’ Memorial Day was observed today at the RIMS Victims Memorial Square, Lamphelpat, to pay tribute to the civilians who lost their lives in the tragic firing incident inside the RIMS campus in 1995.
The memorial observance was organised by the RIMS Firing Victims Memorial Observation Committee in remembrance of the incident that took place on January 7, 1995, when CRPF personnel opened fire, killing nine innocent civilians and injuring several others. The incident had triggered widespread public outrage and remains a dark chapter in the state’s history.
Those who lost their lives included a RIMS MBBS student from Arunachal Pradesh, a Sulabh toilet caretaker, a rickshaw driver, and six auto-rickshaw drivers, and other daily wage earners. One of the auto-rickshaw drivers sustained bullet injuries that resulted in permanent physical disability.
Family members of the victims, including parents, spouses, children, and relatives, along with representatives of civil society organisations, clubs, and concerned citizens, gathered at the memorial site to offer floral tributes and observe the day in solemn remembrance.
