Kakching, October 7:
The Langmeidong Dramatic Union observed its 70th anniversary by organizing the 48th Kha Manipur Drama Festival 2025, jointly conducted by the Langmeidong Dramatic Union and the Manipur State Kala Academy, Imphal, at the L.D.U. Hall, Langmeidong.
The opening ceremony of the drama festival, commemorating the 70th year of its establishment, was graced by Dr. Y. Radheshyam, MLA of Hiyanglam Assembly Constituency and Chairman of Langmeidong Dramatic Union, as the chief guest. Former Zilla Parishad Member of Waikhong, Ch. Indrajit, and social worker Y. Somorjit of Langmeidong also attended the event as guests of honour.
During his speech, Dr. Y. Radheshyam said that the Langmeidong Dramatic Union was founded in 1955 through the united efforts of the elders of the locality. It has since become one of the leading dramatic unions in South Manipur and has significantly contributed to the growth of drama and theatre in Manipur. He added that although the union once faced challenges in nurturing artists due to limited resources, it has now reached a stage where it can produce and promote talented performers who can represent the state and the nation.
He further mentioned that the drama festival could not be organized for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the prevailing unrest, but it is being resumed this year with renewed spirit. He also expressed that even in difficult times, the artists continue their creative pursuits with dedication and that such festivals should serve as motivation and appreciation for their hard work.
On the opening day of the festival, the Langmeidong Dramatic Union presented an exhibition play titled “Seidangbi.”
The festival will feature performances by 19 teams, running from October 7 to October 18. Tomorrow evening at 4 p.m., Liberty Theatre, Kakching, will stage the play “Antigone.”
