A combined team of Chandel District Police, under the overall supervision of Dharmendra Kumar, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Chandel, destroyed approximately 50 acres of illicit poppy cultivation today at Gobok Hill Range, around 20 km east of Chakpikarong Police Station in Khengjoi Sub-Division.
The operation was led by T. S. Chamna Anal, MPS, Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations), Chandel, and assisted by OC Chakpikarong PS Insp. Joy Martin and his team, personnel of Chandel PS, Reserve Line Chandel, 8 MR, 17 and 43 Assam Rifles, BSF E/200 Company, Forest Department Chandel, NCB & NAB Police team, and SDM Khengjoi. A total of 120 personnel participated in the drive.
According to officials, the destroyed poppy crop could have yielded nearly 250 kg of opium, with an estimated market value of ₹1,75,00,000 (one crore seventy-five lakh rupees). During the raid, poppy pods and seeds were recovered, and four makeshift huts were set ablaze. No individuals were found at the location, and no one has come forward to claim ownership of the plantation.
A case has been registered at Chakpikarong Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
