The 79th Independence Day was celebrated with pride and gratitude at the 1st MR Ground, Imphal. Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla hoisted the national flag, while the parade and cultural programs reflected the country’s unity, diversity, and spirit of freedom.
During his address, Governor Bhalla expressed his deep respect for the sacrifices of India’s forefathers, saying, “It is with immense pride and profound honor that I stand before you today on this historic occasion, the 79th Independence Day. The triumph of our forefathers laid the foundation of this great nation that we are privileged to call our motherland. I salute their unwavering courage, determination, and sacrifice for the freedom of this country.”
He also acknowledged the contributions of the armed forces, stating, “I salute the soldiers of our armed forces for successful operations in Lodh to wipe out terrorism in our country as well as in our neighboring country.” The Governor extended his heartfelt greetings to all citizens, particularly the people of Manipur, whose role in India’s freedom struggle remains etched in history.
The celebrations included a grand march past featuring contingents from Manipur Rifles, Manipur Police, central forces, students, and NCC cadets, followed by vibrant cultural programs showcasing the state’s rich heritage. Performances included Maibi dance, Khamba Thoibi dance, Mao cultivation dance, and Thangkhul dance, highlighting the unique cultural identity of Manipur.
Governor Bhalla paid tribute to India’s freedom struggle and the contributions of Manipuri heroes, recalling the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, the first and second Nupilans, and the enduring role of Manipuri women in resisting colonial oppression, calling them symbols of bravery and empowerment.
In Manipuri, he said, “Manipur gi Ningol singi thounaba eina awnagba thakta ekai khumnajari,” saluting the indomitable spirit, resilience, and hope of the people of Manipur.
The event was attended by former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, former ministers, MLAs, top officials of the Manipur Police, central forces’ top officials, government dignitaries, and other senior officials, making it a memorable celebration of patriotism and cultural pride.
