7th Sangai Film Festival Opens to Almost Empty Seats but Highlights Film Heritage

Leaving almost all seats empty on its first day, the 7th Sangai Film Festival 2025 opened quietly at the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS), yet set an optimistic tone by focusing on film preservation and cultural heritage.

Despite the sparse audience, organisers proceeded with a strong message about protecting Manipur’s cinema legacy.

The opening screening featured a restored version of Aribam Syam Sharma’s celebrated 1993 documentary Orchids of Manipur.

Officials present, including Art & Culture Commissioner H. Gyan Prakash and Tourism Deputy Director Samukcham Jemmy, stressed that digitising old films would help younger generations connect with Manipur’s artistic journey.

A panel discussion followed, where filmmakers shared insights on restoration, storytelling challenges, and the growing need to safeguard Manipuri cinema, with organisers hopeful for a better turnout in upcoming shows.
