ACS Reviews Progress on New Airport and Cargo Terminals at Imphal

Imphal, Dec 4, 2025: Additional Chief Secretary (Transport & TCI) and PCCF & HoFF, Anurag Bajpai, reviewed the ongoing construction of the new airport terminal and cargo facilities at Imphal International Airport on Thursday. The review meeting was attended by Director (Transport) Khumanthem Diana Devi, Deputy Secretary (Transport) Orjubala Haorongbam, senior officials from the Airport Authority of India (AAI), PWD engineers, the project team, and representatives of construction firms Yaishnand and Brahma.

During the meeting, the ACS examined the challenges delaying the project and stressed the need to adhere to the revised timeline. The construction company reported that the transportation of heavy machinery and materials through Dimapur had been hindered due to poor road conditions. They also highlighted the urgent need for water supply to the new terminal and an upgraded electrical load from MSPDCL. Additionally, early commencement of the connecting road from the National Highway to the terminal, to be executed by PWD, was identified as a priority.

The ACS assigned specific deadlines to all concerned agencies to ensure completion of the new terminal by 31 December 2026, calling the project crucial for strengthening connectivity, infrastructure, and economic growth in Manipur. PWD engineers were directed to expedite land acquisition and road construction, while the Transport Director was instructed to coordinate with PHED and MSPDCL for immediate action on water and power requirements.

Following the meeting, the ACS conducted a site inspection of the terminal building, apron, tarmac, and ATC tower. He instructed the project team and construction companies to maintain strict standards of quality and labour safety. Truss work is currently underway, and roofing is expected to begin after April 2026. The new ATC tower building has already been completed.

He also reviewed the newly constructed domestic and international cargo terminals, which have been handed over to AAI and are expected to be commissioned by February 2026.

Expressing concern over the slow progress of the new aircraft hangar—being built by a local contractor—the ACS directed that the work must be completed by 31 March 2026, noting its importance for early morning, late night, and international flight operations.

The ACS later inspected the State-operated helicopter terminal and instructed the Transport Director to carry out necessary repairs and improvements.
