Aftermath of Manipur Floods: Heingang Ground Zero, Khunaijam Leikai Worst-Hit as Imphal East Still Underwater

As floodwaters begin to recede in some parts of Manipur, the true scale of devastation is becoming clearer—Heingang stands at the epicenter. A breached river embankment near the area unleashed a terrifying surge, with Heingang Mayai Leikai and Khunaijam Leikai bearing the brunt of the flood.

In Khunaijam Leikai, the first locality hit, the destruction was swift and overwhelming. Three to four houses were completely swept away, and many more sustained irreparable damage. Families lost everything within moments, unable to salvage even their essentials as water rushed through their homes.

While receding water has slightly eased conditions in Heingang, the aftermath is severe. Once-bustling neighborhoods in Mayai Leikai are now reduced to muddy ruins, with collapsed structures and debris marking the devastation. In other parts of Imphal East, water levels remain alarmingly high—waist to neck deep in several areas—continuing to hamper recovery.

Key government offices, including the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, SP Imphal East Office, and Porompat Police Station, are still submerged and non-functional. According to the Relief and Disaster Management Department, over 1,64,000 people have been affected as of June 2, with one confirmed death. Nearly 3,000 individuals have been evacuated, and more than 35,143 houses have been damaged—a number expected to rise as authorities reach more areas.

Other severely impacted zones include Khurai, Wangkhei, Thambalkhong, and Bashikhong. Public infrastructure has also suffered greatly; JNIMS Hospital has been forced to shut down temporarily, while the Kongba power substation remains underwater, leaving multiple localities without electricity.

Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, led by the Assam Rifles, Manipur Police, NDRF, SDRF, and Fire Services. Volunteers from Arambai Tenggol are also playing a crucial role, helping evacuate residents and distribute food and essential supplies. A total of 57 relief camps have been set up across the state to house displaced families.
