Agroforestry Push for Sustainable Livelihoods at New Chadong

The Soil & Water Conservation Division of the Manipur Forest Department organized a one-day awareness-cum-workshop on agroforestry for sustainable livelihood at New Chadong village, highlighting eco-friendly alternatives to traditional farming.

Officials including Gaithaolu Thaimei, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forest (Development), Vikram Suresh Nadhe, Divisional Forest Officer, Central Forest Division, and M. Wungrin Lansing, Divisional Forest Officer, Soil & Water Conservation Division, graced the event as Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, and Functional President respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Thaimei emphasized the need to develop agroforestry models and nature-based eco-tourism in the region, citing the scenic potential of New Chadong. She also outlined various initiatives undertaken by the Forest Department to promote sustainable livelihoods.

President M. Wungrin Lansing highlighted the unsustainability of Jhum cultivation and introduced a four-tier regulation system, identifying agroforestry as a viable solution.

Resource persons from the Veterinary and Fishery Departments elaborated on piggery farming and fish culture as additional livelihood options.

The workshop, attended by farmers, village leaders, and community members, featured interactive discussions on soil and water conservation, land management, and the integration of multi-purpose trees.
