Gaza City, 11 August 2025 — Al Jazeera has confirmed that two of its correspondents, including prominent reporter Anas al-Sharif, and three cameramen were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a journalists’ tent in Gaza City on Sunday.
The Israeli military acknowledged targeting al-Sharif, whom it described as a “terrorist” affiliated with Hamas, accusing him of leading attacks against Israeli civilians and troops. Al-Sharif, 28, was one of Al Jazeera’s most recognizable Gaza-based reporters.
Al Jazeera identified the other victims as Mohammed Qreiqeh and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa. The Qatar-based broadcaster condemned the attack, highlighting the dangers journalists face in the 22-month conflict, during which over 200 media workers have been killed.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the killings and criticized Israel’s practice of labeling journalists as militants without credible evidence, calling for accountability. The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate described the incident as an assassination.
The strike comes amid Israel’s announcement of a new ground offensive targeting Hamas strongholds in Gaza, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledging to expand military operations. Netanyahu also announced plans to permit greater foreign media access to Gaza.
UN officials have warned that the intensified Israeli military campaign risks triggering further humanitarian catastrophe and regional instability.
