During a press briefing held today at the SP Conference Hall, Imphal West, Manipur Police stated that over the past few days, nightly Meira rallies taking place in various parts of Imphal have seen the involvement of anti-social elements engaging in violent activities.
Police informed that, under the guise of protesters, certain individuals were found using petrol bombs, catapults fitted with iron projectiles, and resorting to stone-pelting against security forces. It was also observed that many participants were under the influence of liquor or other intoxicants during these gatherings.
Further, police stated that some instigators were supplying petrol or kerosene bombs, catapults, and iron projectiles in advance of the rallies, indicating organised attempts to incite violence.
Despite such provocations, security forces were said to have exercised maximum restraint while dispersing the gatherings, with the objective of preventing any collateral damage.
Police added that concerned agencies are actively carrying out their lawful duties in light of the recent incidents.
An appeal was made to all law-abiding citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and harmony, and to refrain from indulging in violence, destruction of public property, and other unlawful activities.
Police also stated that legal action will be initiated against those involved in violent acts, as well as against individuals instigating such activities.
