FEB 6, 2026 (IMP): All eyes and ears are now on the State Assembly session, which is scheduled to begin today (Thursday) at 4 PM with the Manipur Governor’s address. If any floor test is conducted today, many have speculated that the CM Khemchand-led NDA government is likely to receive triumphant winning support in the House, raising the possibility of expansion of his cabinet.
Currently, in the 60-seat State Assembly, there are 37 BJP MLAs in Manipur. The BJP won 32 seats in the 2022 Assembly election, and later five (5) MLAs, who had won from the JD(U), joined the BJP, strengthening the saffron party’s strength to 37.
The alliance MLAs include six (6) from the National People’s Party (NPP), five (5) from the Naga People’s Front (NPF), two (2) from the Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA), one from the Janata Dal (United), and three (3) Independents, namely Nishikant Sapam of Keisamthong AC, J. Kuko Sha of Karong (ST), and Haokholet Kipgen of Saitu (ST). There is one vacant seat following the death of sitting MLA N. Kayisii (NPP).
“With the formation of the new Council of Ministers, peace and development will serve as the guiding principles of the new government,” CM Y. Khemchand wrote yesterday after he was sworn in as Manipur CM. It may be mentioned here that President’s Rule, which had been imposed since 13 February 2025, was revoked yesterday (4 February 2026).
