Imphal, April 30 – Altogether 21 sitting MLAs from Manipur, including NPP and Independent, have jointly submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging for the installation of a popular government in the state to restore peace and normalcy.
The memorandum, dated April 10 and received by the Prime Minister’s Office on April 29, expresses concern over the lack of visible progress during nearly three months of President’s Rule imposed since February 13, 2025.
The MLAs highlighted growing public apprehension on PR for peace restoration and warned that civil society organisations have started public campaigns and protests demanding the return of an elected government. The letter also noted that some groups have blamed the MLAs for failing to take the initiative to form a new government, leading to further unrest and confusion among the people.
“In light of these developments, we feel that the installation of a popular government is the only way to restore peace and stability in Manipur,” the MLAs wrote, pledging their full commitment to work for peace once a government is reinstated.
The 21 signatories include 10 MLAs from the BJP – Tongbram Robindro Singh (Thanga), Paonam Brojen (Wangjing), Lourembam Rameshwor (Keirao), Y. Radheshyam (Hiyanglam), Th. Radheshyam (Heirok), S. Rajen (Lamshang), Kongkham Robindro (Mayang Imphal), Yumnam Khemchand (Singjamei), Kh. Raghumani (Uripok), and S. Kebi Devi (Naoriya Pakhanglakpa); 3 from JD(U) – Thangjam Arun (Wangkhei), Md. Achab Uddin (Jiribam), and Kh. Joykishan (Thangmeiband); 3 from NPP – Th. Loken (Wangoi), Sheik Noorul Hasan (Kshetrigao), and Janghemlung Panmei (Tamenglong); 3 from NPF – Leishiyo Keishing (Phungyar), Losii Dikho (Mao), and Ram Muivah (Ukhrul); and 2 Independents – Nishikant Sapam (Keishamthong) and J. Kumo Sha (Karong).
The MLAs jointly urged the central leadership to take immediate steps in the interest of Manipur’s people and democracy.
