Amit Shah Assures Rajya Sabha of Peace Talks and Defends President’s Rule in Manipur

Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, reassured the Rajya Sabha today early morning that talks between the warring communities in Manipur would soon take place in the national capital as part of the government’s concerted efforts to restore peace in the state.
Amit Shah informed the House that two rounds of talks had already been held between the affected communities in Manipur, with further discussions planned in the coming days.

He highlighted that these meetings were a key element of the broader strategy aimed at addressing the ongoing violence and bringing an end to the conflict. The Home Minister stressed that the government was fully committed to peace in the region, having already conducted thirteen meetings as part of its peace-building initiative.

He explained that the matter had not been raised earlier in the House due to ongoing discussions, but with the next round of talks imminent, Shah expressed optimism that a resolution could soon be reached.

Amit Shah also reassured the House that communication channels with the affected communities remained open, and he emphasised that the government was not seeking to exploit the situation for political advantage. He clarified that the Centre’s primary focus was on restoring normalcy and peace to Manipur.

The Home Minister’s remarks came after the Rajya Sabha adopted a Statutory Resolution confirming the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, a decision which received support from both the Treasury and Opposition benches. While the Opposition criticised the Centre for its failure to restore peace and control the violence in the state, Shah defended the move, describing the imposition of President’s Rule as a necessary step to ensure stability and support the peace process.

He further explained that the government did not typically resort to such measures, but had been compelled to do so under the current circumstances to restore order in Manipur.
