Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha, including the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, which seeks to automatically remove the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Union Ministers if they are detained for 30 consecutive days on serious criminal charges.
The bills also include amendments to the Government of Union Territories Act, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, and were referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee following a voice vote.
Under the proposed amendment, officials facing charges punishable with five years or more will vacate office automatically if not removed by the President, Governor, or Lieutenant-Governor within 31 days of detention. The provision allows reappointment after release.
In his statement, Shah stressed that elected representatives must uphold public trust and constitutional morality. The introduction of the bills faced resistance from opposition MPs, who demanded discussion on voter roll revision in Bihar, prompting Speaker Om Birla to call for decorum in the House.
