AMSU President Bruce Pebam Highlights NRC Needs for Manipur at NE’s Biggest Student Body Conference in Assam’s Karbi Anglong

March 23 (IMP/ASSAM): The President of the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU-HQ), Bruce Pebam, highlighted the issues and challenges of illegal immigrants encountered in the states of Assam and Manipur and stressed the imperative need for an updated NRC (National Register of Citizens) to streamline the upcoming census and delimitation in the state of Manipur during the open session of the 53rd Annual General Conference organised by the Karbi Students’ Association in West Karbi Anglong, Jirikindeng, Assam.

The conference was attended by leaders of various NE students’ bodies, including those from Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Assam. The AMSU President attended as Chief Guest along with AMSU’s Organisation Secretary Thingbaijam Sanachand, HRD Secretary Mayanglambam Kumar, and former Assistant Finance Secretary Alen Naorem. The annual conference was held under the theme “Immediate Implementation of Article 244(A) of the Indian Constitution” and “Autonomy and Land Rights: Rethinking Land Policy in Sixth Schedule Areas.”

During his speech, the AMSU President also recounted the historic agreements on the ‘Foreigner Issue’ between the Government and AMSU in 1980 and 1994 to the people of Assam. He also highlighted the current peace processes prevailing in the state with the formation of a new popular government following the imposition of President’s Rule. The AMSU President further stated that Manipur, with its unique history of over 2000 years, will not accept any compromise on its historical identity or territorial integrity.

He also articulated the need for a collective platform and a common agenda for all students in the region to stand united to reignite the spirit of unity and renew the movement in the region.
