AUGUST 17, 2026 (IMP): The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) strongly seeks clarification from the central government on Indo-Myanmar border swap speculation and resolutely stands for no compromise on the territorial integrity of Manipur, and the student body also strongly demanded an updation of the NRC before the conduct of the census and seeks clarification.
A large number of students from the student body took to the streets in protest in the Imphal, Thoubal, and Kakching areas on Monday, reiterating the demands for the updation of the NRC before the conduct of the census.
The AMSU Organization Secretary (HQ) Sanachand Thingbaijam strongly opposed the reported proposal (by the Government of India) to cede or swap land with Myanmar along the border in Manipur to resolve border issues.
Sanachand Thingbaijam also stated that the people of the state will not tolerate losing even an inch of its historical territory, which the report highlighted a proposal to adjust and finalize demarcation over a 2.75- to 2.8-kilometer stretch (involving roughly 1.4 square miles or 3.5 square kilometers of land) between Border Pillars 65 and 68.
The student body also demanded an updation of the NRC, the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur to identify illegal immigrants, and the protection of indigenous populations from demographic shifts. The student body also strongly insists on postponing census operations in the state until an updated NRC exercise.
