‘Anal Is Naga, Not Kuki’: History and Meitei Deity Lore Recalled at Anal Phetha Ni Alum 2026 Celebrating the Heroes

Questions of ethnic identity, ancient history and shared folklore involving the Anal community, Naga lineage, Kuki migration narratives and a Meitei deity resonated throughout the observance of Anal Phetha Ni Alum 2026 held at Anal Khullen village in Chandel district.

Addressing the gathering, St. Victor Nunghlung, Ex-MLA, 41-Chandel ST (AC), stated that “Anal is not Old Kuki; Anal is purely Naga, both by blood and history.”

He asserted that the Anal community existed over 10,000 years before the immigration of Kukis into Manipur and highlighted an ancient legend involving the Meitei deity Eputhou Wangbarel. According to the narrative, the deity, in human form, challenged Anal warriors in a massive rock-throwing competition to prove his love for a woman from the Anal community, who was believed to be a deity in disguise. The speaker noted that the historic rock associated with the legend still exists at Anal Khullen, where the present celebration was held.

The programme also featured a detailed historical address by Dr. BD Thumdal, Convenor of the Souvenir Committee, who delivered the keynote speech on the occasion. Dr. Thumdal recalled that, as per villagers of Anal Khullen, Chieftain Bangjampa’s birthday was first celebrated on January 12, 1953, which later evolved into Phetha Ni Alam in 1998 to honour legendary Anal heroes.

He highlighted that Thumkhel, Volhlung, Teshung and Pashel Kumthu occupy the highest position in Anal history as legendary figures who defended the Anal people and territories against invading forces, extending their expeditions into present-day Myanmar and the Manipur kingdom, underscoring the historical dominance and bravery of the Anal community.

Dr. Thumdal further informed that on October 8, 2025, the ANTA Assembly approved and inducted nine notable regional (local) heroes as Junior Notable Regional Heroes. The inductees are Seltun Thulring, Ruwngtol Koko, Kanthuwin Kolo, Runlel Kashol, Sinruwng Bera, Jasha Lumiong Ruwngtol Tothar, Sengal Movol and Shungthu Khatter.

The programme, held from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm, began with an opening prayer by Rev. KL Tängthu, Executive Secretary, ANBA, followed by flag hoisting by Hb. Ruwngnem, Speaker, ANTA, and the rendering of the Anal Naga Anthem. Hymns were presented by choirs from Chandel Christian Baptist Church and Chakpikarong Baptist Church.

A monument was unveiled and dedicated by Rev. Dr. BD Kailun, President, ACF. Ps. Monihring, President, ANTA, delivered the welcome note, while special songs were presented by Anal Sinnu Ruwl (Western Valley Area).

The Anal Phetha Ni Alum 2026 Souvenir Book was released by Ng. Lorho, President, United Naga Council (UNC). Cultural presentations included “Phetha Sa Nam” with folk songs by the Anal Khullen Screening Committee and Art & Culture Committee, folk songs by Ps. Shelshung and party, and an Anal cultural dance performed by Yangkhelching Khutha Village.

Larni, General Secretary, ANTA, while an act of blessing was presented by the Chandel Christian Baptist Church Choir.
