Nearly two years into the ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur, the once quiet district of Churachandpur has undergone a dramatic transformation, becoming a hotspot for lawlessness and viral sensationalism.
The most recent incident unfolded yesterday when Manipur Police arrested two individuals in connection with a viral video showing an unidentified man brandishing sophisticated firearms in an undisclosed location within the district. The duo has been identified as Cinsonlun (36) and Lamsuanlal Tombing (29).
Their arrest follows a similar episode from February 12, when 15 individuals were taken into custody after appearing in another viral video, each seen flaunting advanced weaponry.
The footage drew sharp criticism from civil society, security observers, and the public alike, as concerns mounted over the apparent normalization of gun culture in conflict-affected regions.
While authorities struggle to clamp down on such acts of public intimidation and show of power, a more distressing pattern has emerged as a sharp rise in crimes against women and minors. Within just the current quarter, four separate cases of rape have been reported from across the state, painting a grim picture of the deteriorating safety and moral fabric amid the chaos.
