ASHA loses its hope for honorarium hike, Threats for Manipur wide cease-work strike

Jan. 22, 2025: The ASHA workers in Manipur have collectively prepared to launch a cease-work strike from Thursday (23rd Jan) state-wide, alleging the government’s failure to raise their honorarium, which has been a long-standing demand.

The All Manipur ASHA Workers’ Union, while addressing a group of media on Wednesday at the Manipur Press Club, informed that the union may be compelled to boycott the 76th Republic Day Celebration as a symbolic gesture of protest if the government fails to communicate with the health workers as soon as possible.

The union president, Sharmila Begum, expressed disappointment over the government’s inaction despite an ultimatum issued on January 5. The union had demanded an increase in honorarium and the regularization of their employment status, citing the crucial role ASHA workers play in the state’s healthcare delivery system.

ASHA workers, essential frontline health workers, provide vital services to communities across Manipur but have faced persistent challenges, including inadequate compensation and job insecurity, she said.

The union is calling on the government to engage in constructive dialogue to swiftly address their concerns and recognize the indispensable contribution of ASHA workers to public health.
