ASSAM POLL: MP Bimol Blames BJP for Unrest in Manipur; BJP’s Piyush Hajarika Raises Infiltration Issues

APRIL 1, 2026 (IMP): Election canvassing in Assam is at its peak, and Manipur MP (Inner) Dr. Bimol Akoijam, in his political pitch, blamed the BJP for Manipur’s current situation on April 1 while campaigning for Congress candidate Shanti Kumar Singh in Assam’s Lakhipur.

Altogether, 722 candidates in Assam are in the fray for the 126-seat Assembly, for which the election will be held on April 9 of this month.

MP Dr. Bimol Akoijam, while speaking at the Congress office in Silchar, stated that the unrest that has happened in Manipur is because of the ruling party’s policies. MP Bimol also alleged that the BJP “divided Manipur by labelling people as tribal and non-tribal” and warned that Assam could face similar divisions given its diverse social composition. He said such strategies risk deepening fault lines among communities for political gain, according to reports.

Meanwhile, State Minister and BJP candidate from the Jagiroad constituency, Pijush Hazarika, reiterated the party’s commitment to implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which would be enforced within 3 months of the BJP returning to power in Assam.

Addressing a public gathering in Hojai, Hazarika raised the issue of illegal infiltration. He stated that the government would take firm steps to “remove infiltrators” and act in accordance with its stated policy priorities.
