Assam Rifles Pays Tribute to Fallen Heroes in Tengnoupal and Chandel

Assam Rifles conducted solemn wreath-laying ceremonies today in Tengnoupal and Chandel districts to honour the indomitable courage and supreme sacrifice of soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

At Battalion Headquarters, Tengnoupal, tributes were paid to seven valiant soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during “Operation Hifazat” on September 6, 1992. The convoy, led by Major Dhillon and comprising 59 personnel, was ambushed near 14 Mile by insurgents who detonated an IED and opened heavy fire. In the face of grave danger, Lance Naik Patigan Dhobi, Lance Naik Keshar Bahadur Khatri, Riflemen Amarjit Sharma, Khem Singh, Ganesh Gurung, Rajesh Kumar Tripathi, and Lal Dev Yadav displayed unmatched bravery and laid down their lives defending the nation. Their legacy continues to inspire relentless operations against anti-national elements and remains etched in the proud history of Assam Rifles.

Simultaneously, in Sehlon village of Chandel district, Assam Rifles honoured Naib Subedar (Late) Babudhan Gurung, who made the supreme sacrifice during a counter-insurgency operation in Mizoram on September 6, 1966. Leading a patrol party from Champhai COB, he encountered militants of the Mizo National Front and, despite sustaining multiple injuries, fought valiantly until his last breath. His gallantry was posthumously recognised with the prestigious Shaurya Chakra, a testament to his unwavering devotion to duty.

Wreaths were laid and a Guard of Honour was presented by officials and troops in both districts. The ceremonies also included recollections of the martyrs’ heroic actions, inspiring pride and reverence among the ranks.

These commemorations reaffirm Assam Rifles’ unwavering commitment to honouring its martyrs and nurturing patriotism within the force and among local communities. As the “Sentinels of the North East,” Assam Rifles continues to uphold its legacy of courage, sacrifice, and national pride.
