Assam Rifles Remove Years of Darkness from Villages in Chandel

After years of living in darkness, the remote villages of Khengjang and Phaisangjang in Chandel district have finally seen the glow of sustainable light, thanks to a joint initiative by the Assam Rifles, Sunbird Foundation, and HDFC Bank Parivartan Yojana.

The project, implemented under the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and aligned with Operation Sadbhavana, has brought solar-powered illumination to homes that once relied on flickering candles and firelight.

In a heartening ceremony attended by more than 150 villagers and students, the partners distributed and installed 84 solar ball lamps, marking a new chapter in community empowerment.

The event was graced by 28 Assam Rifles personnel, village leaders, Richard from Sunbird Trust, and Dominic, Principal of Khengjang School.

The initiative not only brightened homes but also rekindled hope and self-reliance among the villagers. Children now study comfortably after dusk, elders move safely at night, and social life continues beyond daylight hours.
