Assam Rifles Seizes Opium Worth Rs 2.5 Crore, Foreign Currency in Major Drug Bust in Chandel

In a blow to cross-border narcotics trafficking, Assam Rifles recovered a huge cache of contraband, including over 50 kg of opium and large amounts of cash, during an operation in Manipur’s Chandel district.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a team of Assam Rifles intercepted two motorcycles abandoned near a Mobile Vehicle Check Post in Sajik Tampak, located in the sensitive Indo-Myanmar border area of Chandel district.

Upon thorough inspection, the security personnel recovered 50.5 kilograms of opium, valued at approximately Rs 2.52 crore in the international market. Additionally, the team seized 1.24 crore in Burmese currency (Kyats) and Rs 2 lakh in Indian currency from the scene.

Officials believe the consignment was being trafficked across the porous border with Myanmar, a known route for narcotics smuggling in the region.

The seized items, including the cash and contraband, were handed over to the Chakpikarong Police Station for further investigation and legal action.
