The Apunba Sorokhaibam Sagei Trust (ASST) has extended financial assistance to an Internally Displaced Person (IDP) student residing in a relief camp, who has been selected to represent Manipur at a national-level sports event.
Sorokhaibam Thoinao Chanu, a Class VIII student and daughter of Sorokhaibam Premjit Singh of Khamenlok, Uyumpok under Khundrakpam AC, currently staying at the relief camp located at Thambalkhong Saban Leikai, has been selected to participate in the Taekwondo National Championship 2026, scheduled to be held in Jaipur, Rajasthan, from January 18 to January 23, 2026.
Despite her selection, Thoinao was facing serious financial difficulties, particularly in arranging airfare for travel to Jaipur. After learning about her situation, members of the Apunba Sorokhaibam Sagei Trust voluntarily contributed funds and provided financial assistance amounting to Rs 15,000 to help her participate in the championship.
It may be recalled that Thoinao had earlier brought laurels to Manipur by winning a bronze medal at a previous National Taekwondo Championship, thereby making the state proud.
The assistance was handed over during a small function attended by ASST President S. Tomba, Vice President S. Naba, Secretary S. Basanta, Executive Members S. Chaoba and S. Syamkeshwor, and Convenor Ojit Sorokhaibam.
Speaking on the occasion, ASST Convenor Ojit Sorokhaibam stated that children living in relief camps often face immense financial hardships, which become major obstacles when they aspire to compete at national and international levels. He appealed to the public and concerned authorities to extend timely support to such talented IDP children so that financial constraints do not hinder their sporting dreams and future achievements.
