The rare honour of having an asteroid named after a Manipuri scientist once again came into the national spotlight as Dr. Guneshwar Thangjam attended a special event at the ISRO Headquarters today.
Dr. Thangjam, celebrated as the discoverer of the Thangjam Asteroid, earned global recognition when the International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially named an asteroid orbiting the Sun as ‘11806 Thangjam’ during its 2017 “Asteroids, Planets and Meteors” conference in South America.
His presence at the national meet drew admiration from scientists and participants alike, with many highlighting how a young researcher from Manipur has carved a place in international planetary science.
The moment has sparked renewed pride in the state, reinforcing Manipur’s growing footprint in global scientific achievements.
