Ukhrul, April 5: At least 9 villagers of Konsakhul, including its village chairman and the chief belonging to Liangmai Naga, have been injured in an assault by a large number of people, suspected to be Kuki militants, in Kangpokpi district of Manipur today afternoon.
The Konsakhul Village Chairman, Adam Dirinamai, has been brought to RIMS in Imphal for his treatment, and eight others including Aimson Abonmai, Chief of Konsakhul Village, are being treated now at Khurkhul PHC in Sekmai, according to Konsakhul Village.
The assaults on villagers by Kuki miscreants are believed to have arisen from a land dispute in the area, however, this cannot be confirmed from the source. The Konsakhul Village Authority has considered the incident as “an inhumane and premeditated attack orchestrated by armed Kuki militants masquerading as civilians and so-called volunteers.” The village authority also said a large number of Kuki militants, under the guise of civilians, descended upon Konsakhul Village and launched a sudden, violent assault on the villagers who were peacefully engaged in their agricultural and construction work.
According to reports, on April 4, 2025, while Konsakhul villagers were engaged in land leveling and the construction of residential dwellings, a team of police personnel led by ASI Kamgin Veiphei arrived and presented a photocopied document allegedly issued by the District Magistrate of Kangpokpi, stating that a curfew had been imposed in Konsakhul with retrospective effect from April 2, 2025. The village council members respectfully conveyed that halting the ongoing work immediately would result in significant financial losses, as private JCB operators had been hired on a daily-wage basis. Despite the attempts at dialogue, ASI Kamgin demanded that village representatives report to the Leimakhong Police Station for further discussion. Given the critical nature of the work underway, the village council had no choice but to remain on-site to oversee operations.
And today, ASI Kamgin Veiphei returned with four to five police personnel and along with hundreds of Kukis, and the mobs swiftly encircled the village and unleashed a surprise and brutal assault on innocent villagers. It is also said that the particular ASI Kamgin from Leilon Veiphei, a neighboring Kuki village with longstanding tensions against Konsakhul and the villagers, has also raised serious questions about conflict of interest and bias in the execution of his official duties.
