Awareness Programme in Jiribam Stresses Collective Action Against Human Trafficking

A one-day awareness programme on anti-human trafficking was held on Friday at the Jiribam Municipal Council Auditorium, bringing together stakeholders from various sectors to strengthen the fight against human trafficking.

Organised by the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) under the sponsorship of the National Commission for Women, in collaboration with the Jiribam District Administration, the event was attended by government officials, law enforcement officers, legal professionals, and representatives of civil society organisations.

Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar highlighted the crucial role of awareness and coordination among central, state, and district authorities in combating trafficking. He appreciated the efforts of the Women’s Commission and commended the contributions of women officers serving in Jiribam. He also encouraged participants to spread awareness within their local communities.

MSCW Chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang described human trafficking as one of the gravest human rights violations, often targeting women and children through coercion and exploitation. She called for establishing a dedicated anti-human trafficking cell and stressed the need for social security and employment opportunities to address root causes.

During the technical sessions, Additional Superintendent of Police Th. Karnajit Singh spoke on rescue operations, investigation, and prosecution, noting that trafficking is a global issue with many cases going unreported. Advocate L. Romen discussed legal frameworks, stressing that human dignity is non-negotiable, while Medical Officer Firdosh Bhorot outlined the role of healthcare workers in identifying victims. District Social Welfare Officer W. Hemender elaborated on prevention strategies and rehabilitation support for survivors.

The programme concluded with a call for a unified and sustained response involving Anti-Trafficking Units, government departments, and community organisations to curb trafficking and protect vulnerable groups.

Attendees included district-level officers, Anganwadi and ASHA workers, representatives from NGOs, community leaders, and members of women’s organisations from Jiribam District.
