BABINA Hospital Successfully Performs Rare Vascular Surgery on 8-Year-Old Boy

In a rare medical feat, BABINA Hospital, Khabeisoi, successfully treated an 8-year-old boy suffering from a persistent swelling on his right thumb, which had troubled him since birth. The child, whose condition had worsened over the years despite several hospital visits, was finally diagnosed with a high-flow arteriovenous (AV) malformation—an uncommon vascular anomaly affecting only about 1% of the population.

The child was brought to BABINA Hospital after the swelling began to cause pain and interfere with his writing. Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, Dr. Sidartha Lukram, led a specialised microvascular team in performing a laser-assisted surgical excision of the malformation on June 16. The complex procedure, which also included nerve reconstruction, was carried out with minimal blood loss. The young patient was discharged the next day with restored hand function.

“We had visited many hospitals and doctors, but my son’s condition never improved,” said the boy’s father. “BABINA Hospital provided better infrastructure, advanced laser technology, and affordable care—all within Manipur.”

Dr. Sidartha emphasised the need for early intervention in AV malformation cases, warning that untreated cases could lead to severe complications, including rupture or infiltration into surrounding tissues.

BABINA Hospital’s Super Speciality Vascular Centre is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical facilities, offering advanced treatment for vascular conditions such as AV malformations, varicose veins, aneurysms, and arterial diseases—making high-end vascular care accessible and affordable within the state.

The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality, compassionate healthcare. This successful case adds to BABINA’s growing reputation as a regional centre for advanced vascular care.
