Bangladesh Sees Widespread Violence After Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to Death

Bangladesh plunged into heavy unrest after the International Crimes Tribunal delivered a death sentence to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ruling her responsible for crimes against humanity during the July–August 2024 crackdown on anti-government protests. The verdict immediately ignited large-scale demonstrations, many of which escalated into violent confrontations with security forces.

Crowds attacked police outposts, set vehicles on fire, and attempted to storm symbolic properties tied to the ruling establishment. Officers responded with baton charges and tear gas as clashes spread from Dhaka to multiple districts. Several police personnel were reported killed, and dozens of demonstrators were injured as disorder continued through the night.

Authorities placed key urban centers under heightened security, fearing further escalation. Protesters alleged that the tribunal’s decision was politically engineered, while Hasina—who remains outside the country—denounced the ruling as illegitimate and claimed she was denied a fair trial.

The violence marks one of the most volatile episodes since Hasina’s ouster, underscoring the deep political divide and the challenges facing the interim administration as it attempts to restore stability.
