Biometric Crackdown Begins in Chandel as Illegal Entries Rise

In a step toward streamlining the identification of illegal immigrants, the District Administration Chandel today conducted a hands-on training session for district police personnel on operating biometric machines. The programme, held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall, comes amid rising detection of illegal entrants in the border district.

Deputy Commissioner Chandel, Laishram Nandakumar, said that several cases of illegal immigrants have been reported in Chandel, similar to other border districts of Manipur. As per the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directive, biometric registration is now mandatory for all such individuals before deportation.

The DC explained that while earlier biometric data was collected physically, the latest MHA instructions require online registration so that details can be uploaded and verified through the Foreigners Identification Portal, enabling accurate confirmation of nationality and identity.

He also pointed out a major challenge: many border locations in Chandel lack internet connectivity, making online registration difficult. To overcome this, assistance from the Assam Rifles is being sought to provide internet access in remote areas.

Today’s training aimed to equip police personnel with the necessary skills to carry out the online biometric registration process efficiently.
