Biren brought back unique ‘Maring’ historical memory, Assured 2.5 Crore sport complex

20 JAN 2025: A large group of audiences, especially from the Maring tribe, broke into wild applause after Manipur CM N. Biren Singh thundered from a makeshift stage at Laiching Kangshang Village in Tengnoupal District. He brought back the historical memory, significance, and contributions made by the Maring tribe throughout history for Manipur.

During the seven-year devastation caused by the Burmese invasion (1819-1826), it was the Maring tribe who helped apply instant-killing poison to the tips of the dart weapon ‘Arambai’ (used by the Royal cavalry). The poison used on the dart-tips was created and provided solely by the Maring, Biren stated. He also recounted a folklore in Manipur that highlights the diligence and resourcefulness of the Maring tribe, citing the ancient folklore, “Maringna saba shungbai di namma hangdey” (which loosely translates to “Maring’s granary leaves no holes”).

The Chief Minister also praised the people of Laiching Kangshang Village for cultivating certain vegetables while refraining from poppy cultivation.

While responding to a memorandum handed to him, the CM announced plans to develop a sports complex with an indoor gym at the function venue, with an estimated cost of around Rs. 2.5 crore. He added that the funds would be earmarked in the next budget. He further informed that the government would consider opening a branch of the Employment Exchange office at Machi Sub-Division and assured that the approach road to Laiching Kangshang Village from Pallel would be blacktopped. Additionally, he mentioned that a women’s market would be constructed in the village.

The program was attended by Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam, PHED Minister L. Sushindro Meitei, MLA of Kakching AC S. Mayanglambam Rameshwar, Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Tengnoupal District, senior government officials, village chiefs, and the people of Laiching Kangshang Village.
