Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has called on the Manipur government to deploy state security forces along the Mizoram border following reports of 11 unauthorized villages in Mizoram, allegedly set up by illegal immigrants.
Addressing the media, Biren Singh warned of a possible influx of immigrants into Manipur as a result of ongoing eviction drives in Mizoram. “The influx of Myanmar nationals into Manipur and Mizoram has continued since 2021 due to the conflict in Myanmar. While Mizoram has managed so far, new evictions could lead to more people crossing into Manipur,” he said.
He urged the state government to maintain strict vigilance, particularly in Churachandpur, which shares a border with Mizoram. “Security checkpoints must be strengthened, and the border area kept under constant watch,” Biren stated.
Commenting on the ongoing turmoil in Myanmar, the BJP leader appealed to both the Centre and the state government to tighten border controls while balancing humanitarian considerations. “On humanitarian grounds, we can allow them temporary refuge, but proper identification is essential. I hope the government takes necessary steps soon,” he added.
