BJP Opposes Illegal Immigrants, Not Native Muslims of Assam: Union HM

APRIL 2, 2026 (Agency Input): The Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah said on Thursday that the BJP is against infiltrators but not against the original (indigenous) Muslim inhabitants of Assam, while addressing a huge poll rally in the Kaliabor constituency of Nagaon district in support of AGP candidate Kesab Mahanta.

The Union Minister Amit Shah arrived in the state this afternoon on a two-day visit to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party and other NDA candidates ahead of the Assembly elections. He criticised the Congress party for neglecting Assam during its tenure and informed that the BJP-led NDA government allotted over 178,000 crores to Assam during the last 10 years.

During his address, Shah also said the BJP’s stance is against “ghuspethiyes” (illegal immigrants), not native Muslim groups in the state, and accused the Congress party of giving it a communal spin ahead of the election and politicising the issue.

The Union Home Minister also added that the present BJP-led government in Assam has carried out massive eviction drives against illegal settlers on government land since 2021, calling it a campaign against Bengali-speaking Muslims with origins in East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh).
