Imphal, January 25: After the investigation into the killing was transferred to the National Investigation Agency, the body of M. Rishikanta was taken on Saturday to his native village, Uchal Makhong in Kakching Khunou, for the performance of last rites. The development followed the acceptance of demands raised by the Joint Action Committee.
Rishikanta was killed on January 21 in the Natjang area of Churachandpur district. He was the son of Mayanglambam Tombi of Uchal Makhong. Family members said that they came to know only after his death that Rishikanta had recently returned from Nepal and had travelled to the Tuibong area to meet his girlfriend, Chingu Haokip, for the first time since ethnic violence broke out on May 3, 2023.
After completing all legal formalities, the body was released from the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences mortuary on Thursday and handed over to Kakching Police.
The killing has led to widespread outrage, with several civil society organisations demanding justice for the victim and strict action against those involved.
