A hand grenade was found early this morning at the residence of Dr. Guru Aribam Sunilkumar Sharma, Director of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), triggering alarm in the Brahmapur Guru Aribam Leikai area of Imphal East district.
Family members discovered the grenade around 6:30 AM. The device was found with its safety pin removed, suggesting it was thrown with intent to cause harm. Personnel from Porompat Police Station, along with the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, arrived swiftly. The grenade was defused at the site and later safely detonated at the Nongmaiching foothills.
Following the incident, locals staged a protest later in the afternoon condemning the act. Residents said such threats should not occur in public or residential areas. “We strongly condemn the throwing or placing of bombs at someone’s home,” said one of the protesters.
This is the second such incident targeting Dr. Sunilkumar, with a similar explosive device found at his residence in November 2023.
A case has been registered. So far, no individual or group has claimed responsibility.
