All business activities in Thangal Bazaar, in the state capital, came to a halt on Thursday as all the shops began an indefinite shutter-down strike in protest against the state government’s excessive actions in the ongoing eviction drive.
What disheartened the plot owners of Thangal Bazaar and Paona Bazaar was the excessive drive and demolition acts carried out without proper demarcation and prior information. The convener of the Association of Victims of Plot Owners, Jogesh Jain, said that, complying with government orders, they had initiated the removal of all the extended structures that encroached on footpath areas and other spaces. However, the drive began to affect shops and buildings near the areas, without proper demarcation and prior information.
However, the shutter-down does not cover Ima Keithel, which remained open since early morning without any effect. Some shops in the Paona Bazaar area could also be seen open.
The Thangal Bazaar area of Imphal is a bustling commercial hub with numerous shops, including general stores, department stores, supermarkets, and various other businesses. It is known for its diverse range of goods.
