Imphal, March 8: Marking the celebration of International Women’s Day, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur, announced a budgetary provision of ₹350 crore aimed at supporting nearly 3.5 lakh women across the state to help mitigate economic hardships arising from the ongoing crisis.
The announcement was made during the state-level observance of International Women’s Day held at the City Convention Centre on Sunday.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the financial support would provide much-needed relief to women facing economic challenges due to the prevailing situation in the state.
Khemchand Singh also expressed hope for a return to normalcy, stating that people currently unable to move freely due to the circumstances would soon be able to do so without fear or hesitation.
Highlighting the vital role of women in Manipuri society, the Chief Minister lauded their contributions across various spheres — from sustaining families during social crises to strengthening the economy. He noted that many professionals today, including doctors and government officials, are children of hardworking mothers and widows who supported their families by weaving and selling traditional garments.
The programme was organised by the Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur and was attended by several legislators and senior officials, including Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Goel.
