Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Thursday strongly condemned the ambush on a goods vehicle along National Highway-202 in Ukhrul district, terming the incident a cowardly attempt to disrupt peace and stability in the state.
The attack took place during the forenoon hours between Leingangching and TS Kasom under Litan Police Station. A truck driver from West Bengal succumbed to bullet injuries sustained during the ambush, while a police constable suffered a gunshot injury on his knee.
Expressing grief over the death of the driver, the Chief Minister said individuals involved in transporting essential commodities play a vital role in maintaining uninterrupted supply across the state and targeting them was an inhuman act aimed at aggravating the prevailing tension in the region.
He further stated that the ambush appeared to have been orchestrated by vested interest groups attempting to derail the state government’s ongoing initiatives to restore normalcy and peace in Manipur.
The Chief Minister also wished speedy recovery to the injured police personnel.
Meanwhile, security forces have launched search and cordon operations in nearby areas to trace those responsible for the attack and take action against them in accordance with the law.
