Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna has officially recommended Justice BR Gavai as his successor, forwarding his name to the Union Law Ministry for approval.
With this formal recommendation, Justice Gavai is poised to become the 51st Chief Justice of India, continuing the tradition of seniority-based appointments to the highest judicial post in the country.
The recommendation comes in line with established protocol, where the outgoing CJI suggests the name of the next senior-most judge of the Supreme Court for the top post. If approved by the government, Justice Gavai will assume office upon the retirement of CJI Khanna.
Justice BR Gavai, known for his judicial acumen and wide experience, will also be the second Dalit to hold the position of Chief Justice of India, following Justice K.G. Balakrishnan.
The Union Law Ministry is expected to process the recommendation and forward it to the President of India for final approval in the coming days.
