The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) is set to hold an exclusive meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on 27th May 2025 in New Delhi. The meeting aims to initiate follow-up action on the resolutions adopted during the historic Manipur People’s Convention held on 3rd May 2025 at Khuman Lampak, Imphal.
Initially convened to push forward the pending political and security processes regarding the prolonged Manipur Crisis, the agenda has now been expanded in light of the recent Gwaltabi incident and the resulting public unrest. The incident has been further aggravated by the continued inaction and ignorance of the Governor and state administrators under the current President’s Rule.
COCOMI expresses serious anxiety and dissatisfaction over the unwarranted use of mock bombs and tear gas shells on non-violent protestors, particularly women, during peaceful demonstrations held today. The deployment of such aggressive crowd control measures against unarmed civilians, many of whom were mothers and elderly women, is deeply concerning and unbecoming of a democratic and sensitive administration. The injury of several women protestors is unacceptable, and COCOMI demands that such hostile actions by security forces must immediately cease and be thoroughly reviewed.
As a result, the agenda for the meeting will also include the following key demands from the people of Manipur:
• A public apology from the Governor for the perceived insult to the people of Manipur.
• The resignation or immediate transfer of the Chief Secretary (CS), Director General of Police (DGP), and Security Advisor, all of whom are viewed as incompetent and responsible for making anti-state decisions which have added to the deteriorating situation.
• An end to excessive force against peaceful protestors and accountability for security personnel involved in today’s incident.
A 7-member delegation led by the Convenor of COCOMI will represent the people of Manipur at the meeting. In the absence of the Convenor, the remaining Coordination Committee members, along with the Women’s Front and Student Front of COCOMI, will continue the ongoing public agitation in the state.
