College Teachers and Students Protest Over Alleged Land Dispute

March 21, 2025 : Faculty members and students of Modern College, Imphal East, staged a sit-in protest on Friday, opposing what they claim to be an encroachment on the college premises by private individuals.

The protesters raised concerns over a recent demarcation notice issued by the Settlement Office at the request of Bijoy Koijam, a former MLA. They argued that the disputed section of land has been under the college’s custody since 1965, with several constructions, including hostels, sanctioned by the Imphal East Magistrate and the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Highlighting that trees on the campus have been growing for over three decades, the protesters expressed shock at the sudden notice. They acknowledged that a portion of the land might not belong to the college but urged the authorities to carefully reassess the situation and address their concerns.

The demonstrators have called for immediate intervention from the state government to prevent any unlawful encroachment and protect the institution’s property.
