Reflecting growing concerns over the prolonged displacement of thousands in Manipur, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President K. Meghachandra today lambasted the BJP-led state government and the Centre for their alleged failure to rehabilitate Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), even after more than two years of ongoing ethnic turmoil.
During his visit to relief camps in Phubala and Saiton areas of Bishnupur district, Meghachandra interacted with camp residents and addressed the media, expressing deep disappointment over the current state of resettlement.
He categorically rejected the so-called three-phase resettlement plan, stating that it lacked a clear roadmap for restoring displaced people to their original homes.
Instead of promoting unity or permanent rehabilitation, he said, the proposed plan threatens to deepen the existing divide and prolong the suffering of those who have already lost everything.
The Congress leader further alleged serious irregularities in the ongoing construction of prefabricated houses meant for the displaced.
At Saiton, he pointed out that the construction process had no official work orders and no tenders were floated for the proposed projects.
He claimed that the construction abruptly came to a standstill shortly after the imposition of President’s Rule in the state about six months ago.
Calling it a “scam of hundreds of crores,” Meghachandra accused those in charge of misusing public funds meant for humanitarian relief and demanded immediate accountability from the government.
The MPCC President also stressed that Congress will continue to stand with the displaced communities and push for a rehabilitation model rooted in justice, transparency, and dignity.
He reiterated the party’s demand for a comprehensive plan that ensures the safe return of the IDPs to their original homes, rather than confining them to temporary shelters indefinitely.
