March 11, 2025 : The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has come out strongly in defense of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, refuting MP Leishemba Sanajaoba’s statement in Parliament that attributed the transfer of Kabow Valley to Nehru’s tenure.
Instead, the party has placed the blame on King Marjit Ningthou, who ruled Manipur from 1813 to 1819.
Addressing the media at Congress Bhawan on Tuesday, MPCC chief spokesperson Hareshwar Goswami dismissed the Rajya Sabha MP’s claims as “90% misleading,” asserting that historical records prove Kabow Valley was handed over to Burma by King Marjit, not Nehru.
To substantiate his argument, he presented archival documents, including references from Cheitharol Kumbaba, the royal chronicle of Manipur.
He further pointed out that compensation, which Sanajaoba mentioned in his statement, was never a commitment from the Burmese government but rather the responsibility of the then British administration.
Goswami accused the Rajya Sabha MP of distorting history to mislead the public and called for a fact-based discussion to set the record straight.
“If the MP has credible sources, we are ready for an open debate,” challenged Goswami.
