Feb 3, 2025: Congress MLAs in Manipur have submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, urging him to advise Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to refrain from making remarks that threaten the privileges and rights of Members of the Legislative Assembly.
The move follows a controversial statement made by the Chief Minister during a function at Thambal Shanglen on January 14, where he allegedly warned that legislators who move a “No Confidence Motion” would not be allowed to remain in their residences.
CLP Leader Okram Ibobi, speaking after submitting the memorandum at Raj Bhavan, described the Chief Minister’s remark as a serious threat to the Members of the Legislative Assembly and a violation of parliamentary privilege.
Ibobi emphasized that while the Congress party may or may not move a No Confidence Motion, it is a decision that will be determined in due course.
The Congress has called for the Governor to intervene to protect the rights of lawmakers, ensure that such remarks are not repeated, and ensure that all members follow the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business during the upcoming Assembly Session.
The CLP leader was accompanied by Keisham Meghachandra, President MPCC, Th. Lokeshwar, Chief Whip of CLP, and MLA Okram Surjakumar.
