MLA Keisham Meghachandra, who also serves as the President of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, has strongly opposed the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act by the Narendra Modi government. Expressing his objection through a post on social media platform X, Meghachandra described the legislation as unconstitutional and a direct violation of Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to freedom of religion as a fundamental right.
In his statement, Meghachandra argued that the Waqf (Amendment) Act represented an attempt by the government to bring personal laws under state control, undermining the autonomy and rights of minority communities. He emphasized that the Act could lead to the unlawful appropriation of properties belonging to minorities, which he said was a cause of concern for the community.
“This is nothing but an unconstitutional legislation that threatens the rights of the minority communities in the country,” Meghachandra remarked.
The Congress leader reiterated his commitment to standing alongside the minorities in their opposition to the controversial law. He criticized the legislation as part of the broader divisive agenda of the RSS/BJP, accusing them of attempting to undermine the law of the land. Meghachandra also reaffirmed that both he and the Congress party would continue to oppose what they perceived as a harmful and divisive move by the ruling government.
