JAN 11, 2025 (TBL): Following the AICC call for a protest against the replacement of MGNREGA, the Thoubal District Congress workers held a one-day fast protest demanding the restoration of MGNREGA at its office in Thoubal.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), a flagship programme launched during the UPA regime, was replaced with a new bill called Vishik Bharat-G Ram G in Parliament.
N. Lukhoi, President of the District Congress Committee, Thoubal, said, “MGNREGA has been a lifeline for the people, providing employment and dignity. The BJP government’s attempt to replace it is a threat to the rights of the people.”
The protesters demanded “Restoration of MGNREGA,” “Protection of workers’ rights,” “₹400 daily wage for workers,” “Down with RSS and BJP,” and others.
The protest was part of a larger movement to save MGNREGA and protect the rights of workers.
The protest, organised by the District Congress Committee, Thoubal, was participated in by members from the District, Block, and Mahila Congress Committees.
